Swedish Championship 2009 in English Scrabble   Skriv ut

On 23 May 2009, the Swedish Scrabble Association (SSA) arranges the second Swedish Championship in English Scrabble in Stockholm. It is the fifth and probably last tournament that will give qualification points for Sweden's place in this year's World Scrabble Championship, which takes place in Malaysia 26-29 November 2009.

For more information, read about the Swedish WSC qualification process and WSC 2009. The championship also gives rating points on the English Scrabble rating list. Everyone is very welcome to the event, to take part or to observe!

En svensk version av den här inbjudan finns här.

Greger Nässén

Participants
The Swedish championship 2009 is open for up to 24 players. To be able to take part in the championship you must be a Swedish citizen, or a foreign citizen who has lived permanently in Sweden for more than 5 years. If at least six players play all their games, they will get WSC qualification points according to the rules of the SSA. If the tournament should be fully booked and there are late cancellations, any alternates have to be prepared to enter at short notice.

Registering
You enter as a participant on the SSA website www.scrabbleforbundet.se. Click on the button Anmälan next to Engelskt Scrabble-SM in the list Kommande turneringar of upcoming events, and then click on Vidare (Next). Choose your name (if you have played a registered game in Sweden before) or type it along with other personal details. Finally click on Skicka to send a registration e-mail to the tournament director Greger Nässén.

If you have registered and need to cancel, please click on Anmälan next to Engelskt Scrabble-SM and then choose the option Avanmäla mig från turneringen (Unregister from the tournament). If you have to drop out at a very late stage, please call Greger on +46 702798705.

Venue
The venue is the tenant community room on Orvar Odds väg 5 in Fredhäll, on the western part of the island of Kungsholmen in the centre of Stockholm. The entrance to the room is next to gate 5 on the back of the house (not towards the street). A map over the area is found here.

The easiest way to get to the venue is to take the tube to Kristineberg on the green line. Exit to the left under the tracks and walk straight ahead for about 100 meters over a zebra crossing. Follow an uphill path with handrails to the street of Fredhällsgatan. Where the street ends you walk on between two parallel houses with a tiny park. The door to the venue room is next to gate 5 in the house to the right. You can also take bus 62 or 49 from Fridhemsplan station to the bus stop Frödingsgatan, which will get you a bit closer to the venue. If you plan to go by car or still feel unsure, please contact Greger for more detailed directions.

Tournament fee
The suggested tournament fee is SEK 100 which you pay at the venue. If you're not a member of the SSA (or haven't renewed your membership) you also need to pay a membership fee of SEK 60 (SEK 30 if you are born in 1991 or later). The tournament fee also includes beverages, tea, coffee and snacks. Nearby you find a grocery shop, restaurant, hamburger grill and pizza place. There is also a fridge, microwave and cooker at the premises.

Pairing system
The championship will be played in nine (9) rounds. The pairing software Manfred will be used for Swiss (Monrad) pairing with unadjusted spread calculation. A free round is counted as a win with +200 points. If the number of participants is low, the pairing system may have to be adjusted, so that players may meet again at the end of the tournament.

Timetable
Information 9.00 am - Round 1 9.10 - Round 2 10.10 - Round 3 11.10 - Lunch 12.10 - Round 4 1.15 pm - Round 5 2.15 - Round 6 3.15 - Break 4.15 - Round 7 4.30 - Round 8 5.30 - Round 9 6.30 - Prize ceremony 7.45.

Rules
The championship follows the official Swedish tournament rules of SSA, dated 14 January 1999, with amendments adopted on 21 May 2004 and 7 May 2006. Unlike Swedish tournaments, however, the match time per player and game is 25 minutes instead of 30 minutes, since this is international standard when you play English Scrabble elsewhere.

Wordlist and checking
The tournament wordlist is the international tournament wordlist Collins Scrabble Tournament & Club Word List, förkortat CSTCWL (eller CSW 2007). Participants are expected to adjudicate word challenges together. A referee and deputy referee will be appointed at the premises.

WSC qualification points
Championship players eligible for WSC qualifiation get qualifying points according to their relative final standings. The last placed player gets 1 point, the second but last 2 points, the third but last 3 points and so on. The three best participants also get 16, 8 and 4 bonus qualifying points. When the WSC qualification process is closed, the SSA committee will offer the player with the highest qualifying points the chance to represent Sweden at the WSC (at his or her expense). The next best player is asked to be the official alternate. If one or both of these players decline, alternates can step in according to their final qualification points.

Prizes and challenge pets
The Swedish champion will be the guardian for two years of the challenge trophy Squash Cup, which was first handed out in 2005. This year's champion will also be entrusted with a new challenge pet, named after the champion. If Marja Takala and Gunnar Andersson take part this year, their challenge pets will also be available to challenge at the championship. Other prizes will of course also be awarded for standings, bonus words and a special category.
